I write this with a very full stomach! We just had an opening BBQ. I ate with my roommates, and it was our pleasure to be joined by Dr. Dan M. Sullivan, Ph.D. He will be our organic chemistry professor. He was very friendly, and my roommates and I are super excited for the organic chemistry portion of this program as it will prepare us for our future classes and the MCAT. As we ate together, the other instructors introduced themselves. There was great food, excellent coleslaw, and terrific cookies! I also met more SMDPers. I hope I will remember all their names! Before, we had played a Jeopardy game to aquaint us with some of the program's rules. The winners got gift certificates to a famous local restraunt and SMDEP shirts.
After the jeopardy, the RAs took some of us to Wal Mart and Target. I stocked up on some simple necessities. It's very convenient that Wal Mart is near. The RAs say that you can walk there if you'd like, but they will also drive you there. All the RAs are very, very nice!
Coming back from Wal Mart, my roommates needed to carry their heavy water bottle packs to their rooms so they used big carts. After we carried the merchandise to the rooms, another roommate and I decided to take the carts we used back down. We used the elevator...and for the first time in my life, I got stuck in an elevator. We called Mr. Toller, the program coordinator, and he took care of it right away. A very big musuclar man literally ripped the doors apart with his bare hands. I wish I had pictures to share...but it seems like I never have a camera on hand when the most exciting things happen. Oh, well!
Tomorrow is when we officially start our "learning." We've already received assignments, however, but we've had a pretty flexible sleep schedule! The bus to UNMC's campus leaves at 7:00 AM, breakfast is at 6:30 AM...I have to wake up early!!
