Another typical day. The day started with breakfast, then the bus ride to UNMC from UNO. Our very first lecture of the day was Biostats. This Thursday is the last day of Biostats, as well as the day that our big group projects are due!! I am so excited, because I always get excited before giving presentions. Not due to nervousness, but I just feel like I want everything to go smooth. Tomorrow my group meets after our fireside chat to discuss the project some more and practice one last time. It should be great ;)
After lunch, we began our very first session of study skills. Basically, we received a run-down of important study skills and techniques. I learned that the average human attention span lasts approximately 30 to 45 minutes. One study technique I'll try using is studying for 50 minutes, then taking a 10 minute break. I've tried sitting for three hours in a row to study and that doesn't always feel productive, anyway. Although this may seem like basic common sense to people, this course hopes to prepare us for graduate/ professional studies. Knowing how rigorous medical school will be, I'll be looking forward to actually practice the skills we talk about.
Our TA told us that the study rooms at UNMC have motion sensors, and sometimes students will sit in them to study without moving at all for hours at a time...and the lights in the room suddenly go off. Now that's a good indicator that you might want to get up and stretch for a bit! ;)
We have also learned that if you miss the bus, distract classmates, fall asleep in class, insult others, etc you will be fined. The fines range from $10 to about $25, if I remember correctly (I don't remember the exact dollar amounts, but I don't plan on making any trouble!!). Apparently some students haven't been very serious, which is sad, considering the fact that we are lucky to be here, even if we did have great applications and such.
Again, I apologize for the lack of fascinating pictures. I'll try to take better ones tomorrow and make my posts more interesting. One of the things I like about this program is how it has given me a better, broader view of medicine. I am now better able to compare medical schools to each other more effectively, and I feel more driven and competitive to create a better medical school application. I think I may have said this before...but I feel the same way each and every day!!
