Because the bus schedule alternates each week, my floor's bus left half an hour later than it did last week and I woke up later. That meant I was in a better mood this morning during Biostats/ Epidemiology! Today we discussed the basic types of data, five number summaries, various types of studies, and techniques for summarizing quantitative data (shape, center, spread).
This Thursday each group will present our clinical study group presentations in which we found a clinical study to analyze using the skills we learned in class. My group has been working hard outside of class time as well, so we hope to give a great speech that others will enjoy.
After lunch, we started our first ever writing skills course. Today we simply discussed the importance of being able to effectively communicate what you mean. Our instructor shared an awesome quote with us from a man named Longinus from the 4th century: "Great writing is the echo of a noble mind." What an awesome quote! What I definitely feel pumped about is how we will be crafting our personal statements, and our instructor even offered to read our personal statements and offer advice. I really appreciate that he would do that for us, especially since personal statements are incredibly important. I was also interested in hearing about the two major schools of English language thought: prescriptivism and descriptivisism, which differ in their views about the way language changes, and its application in daily life and acceptance in dictionaries.
Our TA group also had a book club tonight for the book that we're all reading as part of this program, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks."
There was also a surprise party for students who were born in June. I could tell that the RAs put in a lot of effort with the planning and ordering of the supplies. All of them are truly very wonderful, nice people!
I apologize for the lack of interesting pictures. I have been very busy, and we have been mostly attending lectures, so there is not really any massively fascinating event to take pictures of as of now. I promise better photos in the future :) For now, I mostly have photos of the campus for you to enjoy. It is definitely a beautiful campus with helpful, wonderful people and I feel blessed to be here.
