We just keep getting busier and busier! I woke up at approximately 5:40 AM to get ready (I can now understand why the RAs keep emphasizing the importance of sleep!) and we took the bus to UNMC to hear several speakers. One of them was Dr. Dele Davies, M.D, who is vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean of graduate studies. He gave us a lot of motivation, and shook our hands as we walked out! I liked how he made us feel that nothing is impossible, even in the face of adversity.
My favorite speech was by Dr. Renaisa Anthony, M.D, M.P.H. What I liked about her was how her whole life seemed like a journey of medicine (at least it seemed so to me!). After she got her medical degree, she went on to get her Masters of Public Health at Harvard. She's traveled to SO many places on medical missions, learned the local language, and gave care to locals who needed the service! She was very inspiring...it really has me thinking about how far I went medicine to go in my life. Although all these speeches were so inspiring, we started to get a sense of the true weight of medical school and being a doctor. It's not just a job; it's a lifestyle, an attitude, a personal philosophy. You have to like working with people, being dedicated to all the things you must learn, etc.
Compliance training was pretty much about safety. The presenter told us a story about a man who accidently made coffee with formeldehyde because he thought it was distilled water!! Wow. But it was good information to know. Hopefully we won't have any emergencies!
We also took a campus tour and had lunch in the cafeteria at UNMC. Already after my first real day at UNMC, I feel like I could get used to this place. :)
