Today was the Student Advisory Board elections. People had been hotly campaigning for themselves this past week, and even before the program started! I voted for people I thought would be great members of the SAB, so congrats to all the winners and good try to all the others who bravely ran & campaigned for their positions.
The weather was not great (it actually rained for the first time with thunder and lightening), and a car wash that some students hoped to do to raise money for a local clinic got cancelled. Some other students and I have been searching for volunteering opportunities that are medical related, as that is our preferred type of volunteering since we are all pre-medical and pre-dental students. It's been a little tough to find suitable volunteer opportunities, however. We'll be on the lookout for more fun opportunities to help out the Omaha community while we are here.
My project group met to work on our biostatistics/epidiomology clinical study trial. We chose a study that analyzes the effectiveness of herbal toothpaste vs. regular toothpaste. I really like that topic because I feel that there is a health craze about organic/ natural products, and many consumers overlook the difference/effectiveness of those products. The study we chose said that herbal toothpaste is just as effective as regular toothpaste in fighting plaque! The goal of this project is to apply techniques and topics that we learn in biostats to learn more about how studies are conducted, and to learn to assess the usefulness and bias of studies. I like how this class teaches me to be a more logical thinker.
The RAs also made a Target run today, so I got to stock up on some things that I needed. One of the things I use a lot here is water! I bought a big water pack!
Since there wasn't much going on today, I apologize for not having any super exciting pictures. However, I would like to share with you pictures of what a sample dinner meal looks like at Scott Cafe. Like I've said before, one of the pluses of SMDEP @ UNMC is how we have a very comfortable place to live, and that includes the food. Definitely doesn't feel like dorm food! And as you can tell...I like olives :)
