I have never had physics before, so I was definitely looking forward to getting a taste of physics today. We started with some basics about speed, velocity, and acceleration. I have to admit that even though I've heard those terms about a million times, I've never really had a good grasp of how to practically apply them. That is what I'm hoping to better understand. For some reason, I've always been afraid of physics. I want that to change this summer.
I'm going to be honest about this class:
1) It goes a bit too fast to seriously learn any material in good depth. This does not come as a shock, however, because we only spend a week on physics. I still hope to learn more and keep myself engaged with the material.
2) I really like how Professor Sowell (our Physics professor) makes an effort to answer all questions and put notes on Blackboard. That helps a lot :)
In writing skills after lunch, our instructor had us take a creative approach to understanding word roots. We split into groups and each group had a specific drug name that they had to analyze (ex. Viagra). We had to relate that drug name's word roots to its purpose. For example, Lunesta has the root -lun in it, which is fitting because of the association of 'luna' (meaning moon in Spanish) and the night. It was very cool to notice that!
But the REAL fun part was creating our own disease and a medicine for that disease. Our group's 'disease' was procrastination, something we all suffer from at least once in our lives! Our drug name was Prorunimactinof. Here's the root break down:
Pro: for
Rum: from ruminate (to think seriously)
Act: take action
Of: related to
All in all, I think it sounds pretty legit enough to be a real drug ;) We're also creating a jingle to go along with the name in order to make it memorable. Very fun activity!
