In the evening, we all went to watch the fireworks. Here is a snapshot of what we saw. Afterward, some people started singing patriotic songs, like "America the Beautiful" and "This Land is Your Land." Not only are we future medical providers, but we are also amazing singers! :D It was tough taking pictures in the dark, but I tried! Happy birthday, America!

Got questions about the SMDEP program at UNMC in particular, or just SMDEP in general? Click here to Ask a SMDEPer!
Reasons to do SMDEP:
1) According to data about SMDEP alumni from UNMC, the acceptance rate for medical scholars is between 73 to 84%and the acceptance rate for dental scholars is between 74 to 89%!* 2) Get clinical and academic experiences you may never get in your hometown or undergraduate studies. Dental scholars had a chance to test their dexterity and participate in hands-on dental activities. Medical scholars learned how to check vitals, identify parts on cadavers, and so much more that ordinary undergraduates may never see. 3) Opportunities to shadow in different fields. I shadowed radiology and at a clinic that treated individuals in need. Other students shadowed in cardiology, pediatrics, surgery, etc. 4) Become application-smart with writing, study, and financial skills. We all took writing, study, and financial skills workshops that helped prepare us for the non-scientific aspect of applying to medical school. 5) Be surrounded by medical students and doctors everyday. Become exposed to the medical environment at UNMC's friendly campus. Whenever a question pops in your head, you will very likely be able to access the answer within 24 hours. Seriously. 6) Meet people from all over the USA and the world. Students admit that they had stereotypes coming into the program. Those stereotypes died when they met awesome people and expanded their world view. 7) See a real-world application of biology, chemistry, and physics to health sciences. Many undergraduate science courses do not focus on medicine/ dentistry, but SMDEP aims to create more of a bridge between "ordinary biology" and "health biology." 8) Enjoy Nebraska. The Omaha Zoo, a fun farm festival, Huskers Stadium, College World Series... 9) Understand health care disparities. This course helps you understand why medicine is important in the first place, who needs the help, and what can be done to provide the help! 10) SMDEP won't just change your summer; it'll change your perspective about yourself and your health care future. *Data provided by Stephen Toller, UNMC program coordinator.
