The morning started off with what was officially my first ever real statistics experience. I have never taken statistics before, so I am hoping that the introduction I get helps me ease into this new subject that I'll definitely have to take in the future. Today we got the chance to soak up vocabulary like positive predictive value, specificity vs. sensitivity, and the supposedly infamous 2X2 table. To be honest, statistics doesn't frighten me but I'm the type of person who needs to do lots of problems. Our instructors are very friendly and super supportive in how they feed us the information, however, so I am very comfortable trying these new concepts in class.
Following that lecture, we learned about how we will be doing a group project. Just as we have to do a group presentation in our health care cisparities course, we must also do one in this class. Since we chose a medical topic for our other presentation in our healh care disparities class, we decided to do a dental topic this time.
After lunch, Dr. Ruth Margalit, MD, started giving us the humanities portion of this program. Each week, she will choose a topic where humanities and medicine overlap. Today, she taught us about professionalism. Although this might seem like a no-brainer to some, she let me see how professionalism is more than just a face you put on for work. For a doctor, I believe it has to become your habit, your life. After all, you can't be patient with patients unless you start with family, friends, etc.
We received a small book that had the stories of real life medical students, nursing students, pharmacy students, physician assistant students, etc. It was so cool to go through and read what they had to say about when they first got admitted, challenges they've faced, and so on. What I really like about SMDEP is how we, as pre-medicine students (and pre-dental), get to see what it really is like to be a professional student. We're immersed in the environment; it really is exciting.
I haven't had the opportunity to take many pictures, so I apologize that I only have two pictures to share today. There's a skeleton hanging in the Sorrell auditorium where we listen to our speakers and take our classes. Tomorrow, I have my very first job shadowing experience here at UNMC. I will be job shadowing a radiologist. Due to privacy laws, I won't have much to share, but I do hope to have a terrific day tomorrow! :)
