Fridays are always the best days here at SMDEP, but today was extra special for the medical scholars because we got stethoscopes. The students were soo happy, trying them out on their classmates. Nothing makes a pre-medicine student feel more legit that having a stethoscope hang around his/her neck :)
We also learned to take vitals, which basically means taking body temperature, blood pressure, etc. Most people use those easy electronic machines to take their blood pressure, but we did it the 'old-fashioned' way of using both a stethoscope and cuff. It took a while to get used to, but I got there!! You really have to listen carefully or else you'll miss it. We also practiced interviewing a patient, and discussed the ettiquete of talking with patients.
Before heading to lunch, I had just enough time to work on my HCD group project. After lunch, we had our weekly anatomy session. Today's topic was muscles. First we had an hour long lecture, followed by approximately three hours of lab. We did some living anatomy, which is essentially finding bones, muscles, structures, etc on yourself/ a partner. We also looked at cadavers, focusing on the arms and legs. Our anatomy professor told us that the first test in medical school at UNMC is after 2 weeks and it is over all the vessels, nerves, muscles, bones, etc in the upper body. Yikes.
Today was a great day!!
