Presentation day! We were the first to go, as predetermined by our instructor, even though we just found out today. Our Prezi presentation rocked, and I swear all the other students were amazing by its fluidity and how it moved smoothly from one idea to the next. Plus, we presented good information that we easy to understand, but not too simple that it left our audience bored. The result of our presentation basically came down to the conclusion that herbal toothpastes and conventional toothpastes are both equally effective at helping with plaque and gingivitis even though herbal toothpastes are more expensive.
Following the goodbye to our Biostats instructor, we continued on to work a bit on our HCD project before heading off to lunch. After having a brief lunch, I went to the library to read more books. I love that place, I swear!! They have anatomy diagrams and models that are so fun to look at and use for studying. I haven't used them for study since I'm not actually a med student...but one day :)
Today is Thursday and we have a humanities course on Thursdays. Our speaker, Dr. Virginia Aita, informed us about how medicine and humanities are weaved together. Before coming to SMDEP, I had ideas about how ethics, humanities, and art are related to medicine but I was not quite so sure about how to put my feeling into words. I learned how to better express myself today about that topic:
Arts and humanities give medicine its values. The relationship with the patient is so critical, and the doctor has to understand a patient's values. A doctor's values also affect how he/she treats a patient. Applying aesthetics and ethics in the healthcare environment is imperative in order to make patients comfortable. History reminds us of the evolution of medicine and healthcare. We need to ask ourselves how we can help people feel comfortable at the end of their life? Sometimes, what a doctor wants to do to treat a patient is not what makes a patient comfortable.
We also read poems about medicine that expressed the humanities side of medicine. After class, we divided into our TA groups to write in our weekly humanities journals. Near the end of the program, the weather outside started looking terrible. It started raining like crazy, as if the trees outside were going to break in half. I admit that scary weather frightens me, but I'm thankful to be indoors and safe. I'm excited for tomorrow. Fridays are our clinical experience days when we do job shadowing,
